Industry challenge
Within the cut flower industry, around 70% of Australian growers are micro-to-medium sized. This results in a highly fragmented supply chain, limited industry data, and limited selling options for smaller growers who don’t produce the volumes required to sell into traditional wholesale markets.
Prior to Grown Not Flown, there was no aggregated view of flower farmers within Australia (or globally). If you wanted to purchase locally grown flowers, it would take a significant effort to search, source and connect with local growers, often needing to rely on social media as the platform to find and contact growers, as many of them don’t have their own websites.
The Australian cut flower market is worth $277 million, globally it’s worth $33.3 billion, and is expected to increase to $53.9 billion by 2032. Around 50% of flowers sold in Australia are imported; these imported flowers are often treated with harsh chemicals due to Australia’s strict biosecurity measures.
