CSIRO: Just Meat Protein Powder – seeking partners and investors

Aarti Tobin, Science Lead at Just Meat Co

Opportunity for

  • Food and Beverage Manufacturers, Contract Manufacturers, Sports nutrition companies, Industry Partners and Investors^ interested in a novel protein powder solution.
^This opportunity is only for professional and sophisticated investors.

Opportunity description

Industry challenge

An estimated one billion people worldwide suffer from a protein deficiency. There is a growing consumer demand and a huge market for protein powders. Current protein powders on the market are either dairy or plant-based. However, plant protein powders do not fulfil nutritional requirements in terms of a balanced amino acid profile and there are allergy concerns with dairy protein powders (10% of the worldwide population have an allergy). In addition, these powders have challenges around solubility and mouthfeel/texture.

Just Meat is a food ingredient company delivering protein solutions for the food and beverage industry. Using our novel platform process, Just Meat is developing commercial ingredients to boost the protein, and other key nutritional aspects of high protein products.

Current opportunity

The opportunity is currently being incubated within CSIRO. In the next six months, we are seeking to collaborate with the following types of partners:

  • Food and Beverage Manufacturers who would be interested in using the protein powder in their products, particularly in the Sports Nutrition industry.
  • Contract Manufacturers who would be willing to work with us on scaling up our process.
  • Industry Partners and Investors who would be interested in co-creating this venture.

Our target markets are diverse, from enhancing the performance of athletes and gym enthusiasts, through to supporting nutritional needs of developing nations.

The solution introduces innovation into the meat supply chain, and provides a unique opportunity for meat processors to generate more value from of the animals that they are processing.

Opportunity background

The technology has been developed over the last four years by world class researchers at CSIRO in collaboration with Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). We have taken the process from the lab bench to pilot scale and spent significant time on optimising the process and product.

A patent will protect the IP involved in the process with know-how and trade secrets packaged around this.

Potential other applications

The applications for this product are almost endless - from military applications, aged care, third-world and vulnerable population nutrition, space technologies, infant nutrition through to wider applications in the food and beverage space.
